Yeah, I did do that. I went out to The Button Shop in Malvern last week on my way to the gym and I spent $15 on a button. Crazy or clever???? Well I’ve been called all kinds of names in my lifetime and crazy or clever are in there! On this occasion, I’m going with clever!
I found this fabulous little jewelled back pack by Ermanno Scervino late last year and I’ve been taking it to the movies, out with friends, out for dinner and anywhere I possibly can. It fits my wallet, phone, keys, glasses and lipstick perfectly. God knows I love a bag like that!
I also love anything shiny with beading or jewels. I’m a bit of a magpie, attracted to shiny, pretty things. I’m also a fidget. A tactile fidget. I play with things. I played so hard with this one that the jewels came off. One by one, an entire section came off. I went hunting to replace those jewels. No joy. Could not find the exact shape or size. Damn that!
And the nice old bloke who owns The Button Shop showed me some fancy buttons a month ago. He assured me that the rest would fall out. I was only searching for one crystal at that stage, until I fiddled with the rest and they all came out.
So, I bit the bullet and spent $15 on ONE fabulous button. It’s going to look gorgeous and I can’t wait to sew it on tonight!
Why $15 on a button? Because it’s a beautiful bag. I love it. It’s also very functional for my life. I love that too. One of my key values is BEAUTY. I simply adore beautiful things. I love beauty in gardens, clothing, fine bone china, flowers, shoes, furnishings and linen too. I knew I could not sew a 20c button on that beautiful bag. It deserves a unique, beautiful button and as soon as I saw it this morning, my heart skipped a beat!
Someone else may have tossed the bag to the back of the cupboard, worn it as it is with missing jewels or given it to the charity shop. I believe in recycling and repairing. I believe in purchasing quality and making that work for me. In my world, that means repair and rejuvenate. We have become such a throw away society. Fast fashion does us no favours and I refuse to participate in that.
My $15 button from my local retailer is going to look sensational! What have you got in a state of disrepair that your local bootmaker, tailor or even button shop can help you with? You know that saying ‘use it or lose it’? If you don’t use your local retailers, they will close. You will be left wondering what the hell happened.
Save some dough and get it repaired. Your on line purchases don’t contribute to the families in your local community. When I am doing a wardrobe review for a client, I always find garments and accessories we can rejuvenate.
