Just 10 minutes a day
I’ve been noticing impatience on the road, in retail stores and even in conversations. Rushing from one thing to the next. Madly trying to get everything ready for ‘Christmas’. Catching up with people before the big day as if the world stops on that one day of the year. Crazy eh? Seems funny to me that it’s a time of peace and goodwill, yet we go nuts over it as we overcommit, overeat and drink too much. You know the drill eh?
That was me every year. I’ve notice a distinct shift in my behaviour this year and I must give some credit to a little app I stumbled across this year.
While mindlessly scrolling through facebook a few months ago, a sponsored ad for The Daily Calm came up in my newsfeed. Mmmm, I got curious. I clicked. I opted in for the 7 day free trial, thinking it would be crap and I would not have to waste my money. No way I was paying $80 for an app! I tried it once, maybe twice. Then I forgot about it.
Seems my higher power had it all under control. You see, at the 7 day mark, opt out or iTunes charges you for it. I was stuck with this damn app! Not happy Jan. Might as well give it a crack now. I’m not good at this sitting still contemplating my naval stuff. I really think you can stuff meditation where the sun does not shine. It doesn’t work. Years ago, my best friend said “Carrot, you need yoga”. Pfft! not for me. Not fast enough. I now love yoga. She was right. It just took me over 10 years to get it. I’m a slow learner.
Made sense to me that I could play with this and speed up the 10 year learning process. After all, it’s only 10 minutes a day. I committed to 3 times a week. That’s a good start. 10 minutes, 3 times a week. Initially, I suffered. I twitched and twisted in the chair. Got very annoyed at external noises, especially my partner or the birds outside. How dare they make noise. I’m trying to bloody meditate!!!!! Yes, I struggled and suffered.
I kept going. After some weeks, I found that I was enjoying her lovely voice. Each session, built on the next one. I started doing another block of 10 minutes straight after the first. A few more weeks and I had moved to 5 days a week. Then, hey presto, like magic I figured out that the crack of dawn was the best time for ME to meditate. Andy and the birds are still in bed, all sleeping! I love this time of day.
The upshot is that I now love this practice EVERY day for 20-30 minutes. It’s MY time. I bloody love it. I sleep better. I’m more centred and I don’t feel so scattered all the time. (Ok, that’s a work in progress.) It’s not perfect, but it’s working for me. During stressful times, you know the ones? We are all human. Where I would previously have gone to sugar, I now find myself in this app.
Has it been challenging? Hell yes.
The annual subscription is less than half the cost of a visit to a psychologist. The benefit to my health and wellbeing is immense. It appears that an old dog can learn new tricks.
So, in this week before Christmas, I’m taking it easy, winding down a little. I have not done any baking and I won’t. I don’t think anyone will care. I’m in the midst of finishing off a Christmas stocking for my daughter’s lovely partner Matt. Feeling a little guilty that it’s looking more flash than hers! I think I’ll need to renovate hers a little bit. Although, it’s not too bad for 27 years old eh? Keen to hear your feedback on my little dilemma.
